Most conventional (store-bought) candles are made with paraffin wax, a petroleum byproduct that can release harmful chemicals like benzene and toluene when burned — the very same toxins found in car exhaust fumes. Both benzene and toluene are classified as carcinogens and contribute to indoor air pollution over time (American Chemical Society, 2009).

In addition, some conventional candles still use metal-core wicks, which can emit heavy metals into the air during burning. Combined with synthetic fragrance oils containing parabens and phthalates, these ingredients can compromise the air quality inside your home.
